CBRT reduces Türkiye’s policy rate to 36% while retaining a tightening option
Türkiye’s central bank reduced its one-week repo rate by one percentage point to 36% and lowered both overnight rates. It said underlying inflation was decelerating and domestic demand remained weak, while elevated energy prices and geopolitical tensions continued to pose upside risks. The decision changes the policy benchmark.
Verified facts
- The Monetary Policy Committee reduced the one-week repo auction rate from 37% to 36% on 22 October 2026.
- It lowered the overnight lending rate from 40% to 39% and the overnight borrowing rate from 35.5% to 34.5%.
- CBRT said recent data confirmed deceleration in underlying inflation and that domestic demand remained weak, while elevated energy prices linked to geopolitical tensions posed an upside inflation risk.
- The Committee said the size and timing of policy steps would be decided meeting by meeting and that policy could be tightened if the inflation outlook deteriorated significantly and persistently.
Horizon view
The one-point move changes the benchmark environment but leaves financing conditions restrictive and explicitly data-dependent. Company planning should stress-test credit, deposit, currency and pricing assumptions rather than extrapolate a linear cutting path.
Commercial implication and next step
Treasury and finance teams should refresh borrowing and deposit quotes, floating-rate debt, working-capital scenarios, supplier and customer payment terms, hedging and investment hurdle rates. Separate the policy rate from bank-specific pricing and model a pause or reversal alongside further easing.
What to verify before acting
The decision is not a forecast or commitment to future cuts, and the policy rate is not the effective rate available to a specific borrower or depositor. Credit conditions depend on bank pricing, macroprudential rules, collateral, maturity, currency and borrower risk. This is not investment or treasury advice.
